I’m fortunate to be a Board member of this outstanding service organization (MobilityDog for short). Our mission is to acquire, train and place service dogs (usually standard poodles) with people who have mobility-limiting disabilities. These may result from spinal injuries, limb amputations, multiple sclerosis or a host of other causes. The dogs change their lives by giving them access to job, educational and social opportunities previously unavailable to them.

As with all small not-for-profits, we need plenty of support from the community we serve and from society more broadly. But most of all, we need donations. We are entirely volunteer-run and staffed, so 100 percent of the money we receive goes to the raising, training and sustaining of the miraculous animals that so dramatically improve the lives of their recipients. When you add it all up, we invest about $35,000 in every service dog we place.

If you feel moved to support our cause, click this link (Donor Opportunities — Mobility Service Dog – West Coast Project, which will take you to the donations page on our web site. We are deeply grateful for any amount you can contribute.

We’re also excited to invite everyone to our annual community event, the 2024 Poodle Palooza. It takes place on Sept. 7 from 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM in the circle in front of the Pasadena City Hall (100 Garfield Ave, Pasadena, CA 91101). Join us in the Southern California sun to meet our dogs and their handlers, enjoy live music and gobble a burger or an ice cream treat. You can also enter our raffle to win one of two e-bikes, provided courtesy of Forcome and Young Electric.
